Campus do Mar receives 171,000 Euros from the Xunta de Galicia to finance training of PhDs from Cape Verde

The Directorate General for External Relations and with the EU of the Xunta de Galicia has allocated 171,700 Euros to the project entitled “Strengthening academic training and research in Cape Verde to promote marine sustainable development (Fortalecimiento de la investigación y formación académica en Cabo Verde para favorecer un desarrollo marino sostenible)”, that was presented by the Campus do Mar within the grants call announced for overseas projects. The initiative of the International Campus of Excellence was selected together with 5 other proposals from amongst a total of 15 overseas cooperation project candidates. This funding, promoted by NGOs for Development, has a sum of one million Euros allocated to this program.

This project, which fits well within the Campus do Mar’s Strategic Plan for Cooperation towards Development, will enable financing of the agreement that was signed barely three months ago between the Universities of Vigo and Cape Verde, and the National Institute for Fisheries Development of this country, to enable four researchers to undertake studies within the Campus do Mar PhD program and later start their own program in Cape Verde. “This contribution from the Directorate General for External Relations and with the EU of the Xunta, together with the 120,000 Euros contribution from the Campus do Mar itself, will permit completion of the training cycle of Cape Verde PhDs by financing travel expenses of such PhDs and their thesis Supervisors, as well as pay for registration fees and development of videoconference systems that are needed for their training”, explained the Director of the Department of Internationalisation at the Campus do Mar, Mr. Alberto González Garcés.

This project presented by the International Campus of Excellence and led by the University of Vigo obtained 100% of the grant amount requested, namely; 171,700 Euros, which will be paid in annual instalments of 51,510 Euros and 120,190 Euros during 2012 and 2013 respectively. “This grant is a recognition of the Campus do Mar’s cooperation policy  by the Xunta de Galicia, and provides great economic stability so that the PhD program seed we want to germinate in Cape Verde becomes a reality”, added Mr. González Garcés who thanked the institution for such initiative.
