REQUISITES FOR ACCESS TO PhD STUDIES

1. Generally speaking, in order to gain access to an official PhD program, candidates need to have an official Spanish undergraduate degree (grado) or equivalent, and a Master’s degree (from the Spanish university system), and an undergraduate degree (grado de licenciatura) and a Master’s degree from the Portuguese university system.

2. In like manner, candidates qualifying in any of the following situations can also apply:

▪   Those who have an official Spanish degree or one from another country which is part of the European Higher Education Area, which qualifies one to access a Master’s program in accordance with the provisions of section 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, dated 29th October and having obtained a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in all of their official university studies, of which at least 60 credits should be from a Master’s program. The following cases established in the second additional provision of the Royal Decree 99/2011 shall also be eligible:

1. PhD students who had started their PhD program according to earlier university regulations can access PhD programs governed by this Royal Decree, after obtaining prior admission from the pertinent university, in accordance with the provision of this Royal Decree and the rules of the pertinent university.

2. Also eligible for PhD studies regulated by the present Royal Decree are candidates with Bachelor’s degrees and those with a degree in Architecture or Engineering who have previously obtained a Diploma in Advanced Studies (DEA) as per the provisions of Royal Decree 778/1998, dated 30th April, or had obtained the level of Research Proficiency as per Royal Decree 185/1985, dated 23rd January.

▪   The following shall apply in the case of students coming from the Portuguese education system:  a) Candidates with a Master’s degree (mestre) or equivalent; b) Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree who have a special academically or scientifically relevant  CV and with recognised capacity to carry out this cycle of studies certified by the legal scientific and statutorily competent body of the university where the candidate wants to be admitted; c) Candidates who have an academic, scientific or professional CV and recognised capacity to undertake this cycle of studies certified by the legal scientific and statutorily competent body of the university where the candidate wants to be admitted (as established in section 30 of Act 107/2008).

▪   Candidate should have an official Spanish graduate degree, the duration of which, as per Community law, should be for at least 300 ECTS credits. Such candidates shall need to compulsorily study the complementary training courses referred to in section 7.2 of this norm, except if the syllabus of the pertinent degree included research credits that are equivalent in training value to the research credits of a Master’s degree program.

▪   University graduates who, had previously obtained admission to a specialised health training program, and passed at least 2 years of training with a positive evaluation, in a program leading to an official title in any of the Health Sciences specialisations.

▪   Have a degree in accordance with an overseas educational system without need for any validation but with prior verification from the university to state that the training level is equivalent to an official Spanish University Master’s program and that it entitles the student to access PhD studies. This admission does not imply validation of degree title that the candidate has at the time nor shall it mean any recognition for other purposes other than to provide access to a PhD program.

▪   Have a Spanish PhD degree obtained according to earlier university regulations.
